When we think of meditation, many beginners begin to think its simply closing ones eyes and taking a couple deep breaths which may be right...when you are out of time. Meditation is an exercise for the mind just as jogging and yoga is for the body. There are several ways to meditate. The most common way is a for of concentration where one finds a quiet place, closes their eyes and focuses on a single object, can be anything, and allow your mind to free itself. It helps to refocus ones mind on the object once the mind starts wandering. This helps to control one's thoughts and also eases the tensions and stresses of daily life, more like a timeout from the world. 
Another way to meditate is by closing the eyes and allow all your thoughts to flood with them without engaging too much with every individual thought. This,just like the concentration method does give a break from the world. This does help with problem solving in one's life as it gives you the backseat when it comes to your problems. It gives you another perspective to these issues that in turn allows you to see the situation from another angle.
Other than the benefits stated meditation does have other benefits like:

  • lower heart rate and blood circulation
  • Better self awareness
  • Less anxiety
